Fall and Winter Running

October 14, 2012

When I tell people that I run all year round they assume that in the winter I run on the treadmill. When I explain that I actually HATE to run in the summer and LOVE to run in the winter they really assume that I really like to run on the treadmill. Oh, how wrong they are. I actually love being outside when it is frigid out and pouding the pavement, err snow in most cases – we do live in Vermont!

I don’t know if it is a mental thing. Like I feel tougher because I am outside in the dead of winter running outside when it is snowing out or if it is a true joy of being outside. The feeling of your lungs burning from breathing in the cold air until your whole body turns cool enough that you don’t really notice that burn. When your body is cool enough to prevent your nose from sticking into itself every time you breathe in. Or you can run faster and further because you don’t overheat. That is my personal favorite. Some of my best runs have been in the winter. Most of my worst runs have been in the summer. It probably doesn’t hurt my situation that I have a dog that loathes the summer just as much as I do and hunts out snow piles in the summer to lay down in and cool off.

I feel ya buddy. If it was socially acceptable I would have laid down right next to you. Oh wait, I did!

I think the reason why I love running in cooler temps is because I know how to dress properly. The biggest thing that I have seen when out running in colder temperatures are people wearing ill temp appropriate clothing. Shorts and compression socks can only keep you so warm on 10 degree days with a wind chill of -5! You know they are miserable too because their legs are all red and splotchy and have claw marks from scratching at their miserably cold skin. Yes, maybe I once too was one of those runners.

There is no need to be miserable, or stuck inside on the dreaded treadmill. There are amazing cooler weather running apparel. Hats that wick away sweat but are also wind proof, gloves and mittens that are wind resistant in the right spots that us runners would need, Tights, shirts, socks, shoes jackets etc that all claim to do one thing or another to make running in the winter more enjoyable. One product that I recently got and became a huge fan instantaneously is the Oiselle’s Lesley Running Tight.

Sirius and I running. I’m rocking the Rundelicious top and the Lesley tights

I took them for a spin on a cold and windy run and I was amazed at how great they felt. They were warm but also breathable. I also took them hiking and they were amazing for that as well. They are the go anywhere and do anything in them tights. However, biased or not, I think they are the best for running!

Things that make The Lesley Running Tight better than anything else: They have vents in the back and on the hips that are helpful with breathability. They fit perfectly, snug, but not too snug, and have a drawstring waist band if you do need to cinch them up more. I felt, dare I say, sexy in them? They are SUPER flattering! Hello, fabulous bum, nice to see you!  I am not really surprised that I loved them as much as I did because I absolutely am obsessed with Oiselle’s Stride Short. The fit is very similar except, the Lesley tight is obviously a full length pant versus a short. duh. Probably didn’t have to explain that to you! I was so won over with the Lesley Running tight that I went out and bought the Lesley knicker (crop version) for those not quite chillier enough for pants days. They too are AMAZING!

From the website:

Lesley Tight Details
Same fit and flattering lines as the Lesley Knicker yet enhanced for colder weather running with ankle length compression fabric. Mesh behind knees adds to the already breathable nature of the fabric. Zip storage pocket for energy gel, key, credit card and other essentials. Draw cord waistband.

Dog and cat hair is not included. You have to add that yourself. Or come on over to my house and it can be done

Basically you should order both pairs, the Lesley knickers and the Lesley Running tight and while your at it, just order the Stride shorts too. You wont regret it. I promise.

To make it a little easier to buy all three, as an ambassador I can give you 10% off your first order! Use the code: RUNTODAY to get 10% off! So if you are getting the Lesley Running tight, the Lesley knickers or something completely different like the Happy Hoodie, another favorite of mine, you can enjoy 10% off your entire order.

Great review of the tights! I might actually buy them and maybe, just maybe, I’ll go for some cold weather runs. We are complete opposites when it comes to preferable running weather- the hotter the better for me!
