Summer time and the weather is…HOT

August 2, 2012

My running has been lacking lately. The weather has been so hot and humid that it feels like you are suffocating the whole time you are outside. I know I shouldn’t complain as it is much hotter in other places. I am just not used to this heat at all!

I have been avoiding any type of running after work and with the Olympics getting up early has been nothing but a nice thought but not happening. So with that, my running has been non-existent. I have missed running like I miss a good laugh or a friend. So, when Chris, my marathon running buddy wanted to do an easy run today after work I was hesitant. I looked at the temps and it said 90 degrees at 4 which is when we were planning on going. I agreed to go, grabbed my handheld water bottle and laced up my Newtons.

Shockingly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. We ran to Red Rocks park and ran on some of the trails there and then ran back to my place. I had to squirt some water on under my arms and behind my knees to cool down, but I am alive. (apparently this is Meb’s secret to cooling down when running in hot temps or running the marathon – good enough for Meb, good enough for me!)

I will try to get over my fear of heat and get out in the hotter temperatures more often. However, I am not sad that we are in August and that much closer to Fall. Fall running and winter running are my absolute favorite seasons to run in. I am definitely looking forward to a colder winter than we had this past year. Hopefully we will actually get some snow this year. Yes, it is August and I am talking about snow.

I never would have thought of squirting water behind my knees…I might have to give that a try.
